Most mineral-fiber tiles have a Class A surface-burning rating. “Fire-rated” tiles go further: used with a matching fire-rated grid in a tested assembly, they help a floor/ceiling resist fire for a set time.
What to know
- Class A (flame spread 0-25) describes how a surface burns; it isn’t the same as an hourly fire-resistance rating.
- An hourly rating applies to a tested assembly (specific tiles, grid, hangers and structure) not a tile on its own.
- Check with your local building department for commercial or multifamily work.
