2x2 tiles are the default choice for homes and offices. The smaller module looks more refined than 2x4 and is easier to handle, cut and replace.
What to check before you buy
- Grid width: most residential grids are 15/16"; some commercial ceilings use narrower 9/16" grid. Tiles are made for one or the other.
- Edge: square lay-in edges sit flush with the grid; tegular (reveal) edges drop below it for a more dimensional look.
- Acoustics: look at NRC (how much sound the tile absorbs) and CAC (how much it blocks between rooms). See NRC vs CAC.
- Moisture and sag resistance for basements, bathrooms and humid climates.
Converting from 2x4 to 2x2
You can turn an existing 2x4 grid into 2x2 by adding 2′ cross tees in the middle of each opening: a cheap way to update a dated ceiling.

Frequently asked questions
Are 2x2 ceiling tiles actually 24 inches?
Nominally yes, but most are about 23¾" so they fit inside the grid. Metric 600 mm tiles won’t fit U.S. grids.
How many 2x2 tiles do I need?
Divide the room’s square footage by 4 and add 5-10% for cuts and spares, or use our drop ceiling calculator.
