Ceiling tile sizes

U.S. drop ceilings use two main sizes: 2x2 (24" × 24") and 2x4 (24" × 48"). The tiles are actually a little smaller (usually about 23¾") so they drop into the grid.

Standard sizes

Nominal Typical actual Covers Notes
2x2 ~23¾" × 23¾" 4 sq ft Most popular; more finished look
2x4 ~23¾" × 47¾" 8 sq ft Fewer parts; budget and utility spaces
1x1 12" × 12" 1 sq ft Glue-up or staple-up (not drop-in)
600 × 600 mm 595 mm ~3.9 sq ft Metric: won’t fit U.S. grids

Grid widths

  • 15/16": standard residential and most commercial grid.
  • 9/16": narrow “slim” grid for a sleeker look; needs tiles made for it.

Edge types

  • Square lay-in: flat, sits flush in the grid.
  • Tegular / reveal: stepped edge drops below the grid. See tegular tiles.

Measuring a replacement tile

Measure an existing tile’s exact size and thickness, note the edge, and look for an item number on the back. Then compare at 2x2 or 2x4.

Frequently asked questions
